Serving St. Michael/Albertville, MN area for 4 years

The establishment of the village of St. Michael at its current location took place in 1866. St. Michael’s downtown business district incorporated as a City in 1890. The population was approximately 200 people with an additional 1,000 people in the surrounding Frankfort Township. With the construction of I-94 in the early 1970’s, St. Michael had a quick link to the Twin Cities. This stimulated rapid growth through the 70’s to the present.

In 1987, when I (Paul Vorderbruggen) graduated from St. Michael-Albertville High School the population of St. Michael was approximately 1200. In the course of 100 years the population grew by only 1,000 people. In 1997, St. Michael had a population of approximately 7,200 people in about 37 square miles. In 10 years the population had grown by 6,000 people, due in part by the merging of St. Michael with the Frankfort Township. In 2006 the population is estimated at about 14,000, a 10 year growth of another 6,000 people.

The next chapter in St. Michael’s history is expected to bring new challenges and opportunities as residential growth continues and commercial and industrial development begins to expand. Albertville has grown quietly alongside St. Michael from a farming community into a busy shoppers oasis. Outlet malls, coffee shops, furniture stores, antique shops, you name it. You can find it in Albertville.

I often sit in a coffee shop that is just south of I-94. It is on the Northeast corner of what used to be my Grandpa Clem Dehmer’s farm. The change and growth that has taken place is at times mind-boggling, but I am very glad to have the memories of watching my Grandpa and uncle work the land.
