If you're looking for ministry with at-risk-youth that combines a community ministry with camping, giving you the option of urban, suburban or small-town locations you may be interested in talking with us.
At first, we may appear to be only a camp ministry because most of our best pictures do come from our scenic camp setting. But, our focus is on maintaining an ongoing long-term relationship with troubled kids in their home areas. Various times at Timber Bay Camp are scheduled throughout the year.
According to your interest, ministry time with your kids would be about 85% in the community and 15% at Timber Bay Camp. We are intentionally avoiding giving youth a great camp experience and neglecting follow-through when they return to often dysfunctional settings. We're "the camp that comes home with the kids."
Faith-Driven Risk Takers Survive The key to Timber Bay’s ministry is not so much what we do as who does it. Staff must be people of compassion who are comfortable with troubled youth, committed to Christ, and growing in competence.
Our flexible ministry atmosphere is attractive for our style of potential staff. Bureaucracy is deliberately kept to a minimum, so there’s greater freedom and authority for staff to focus on ministering.
This flexibility developed from what at first would seem a major problem: support-raising. We recognize that usually only entrepreneurial, faith-driven risk takers who take a strong ownership of their ministry survive the rigorous entry and support raising process. So to encourage and keep such people, our leadership philosophy is: 1) Find good people with a God-given desire for ministry to troubled youth; 2) Train and orient them; 3) Hold them accountable for mutually set goals; and 4) Stay out of the way!
While youth ministry is traditionally relatively short-term, this "make it happen" philosophy has led to a 12-14 year average tenure for established Timber Bay staff. Some current staff have been with TB for over 25 years, providing excellent mentors for new staff. People who thrive on challenge, freedom and variety are potential Timber Bay staff—people who may be uncomfortable in “safe,” salaried and sometimes stifling settings. Surviving our tough entry process can lead to a satisfying, effective ministry.
